Monthly Message to Families:

Taking an Active Role in Student Success
October 2026

Last month, I shared the importance of showing up and how being present at school each day helps students build a strong foundation for success. This month, I want to build on that message by focusing on another important part of student success: being proactive.

Through our continued work with Leader in Me and the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, students are learning what it means to take responsibility for their choices and actions. Habit 1, Be Proactive, encourages students to take ownership of their learning and recognize how their choices can make a positive difference.

While we encourage students to practice this habit at school, it's something families can reinforce at home, too.

One of the simplest ways to support learning is by making reading part of your family's routine. Whether it's reading a bedtime story, taking turns reading aloud, or talking with an older student about what they're reading, those moments help build important skills and encourage a love of learning.

Being proactive also means staying involved in your child's education. Take time to check grades and assignments, ask questions about what they're learning, and celebrate their progress. Parent-teacher conferences are a great opportunity to connect, but don't feel you need to wait for a scheduled conference to reach out. Our teachers and staff are here to help, and open communication between home and school makes a difference.

I also encourage families to stay connected by visiting our district website, reading school newsletters, and following our social media pages. There are so many great things happening in our schools, and we want you to be part of them!

I know how busy life can get, and finding time for one more thing isn't always easy. As a father of four daughters, I remember needing that reminder myself from time to time. But those few minutes spent reading together, checking in on schoolwork, or having a conversation with a teacher are worth it. Those small efforts can make a lasting difference in our children's education.

Helping students succeed takes all of us working together. When our schools, families, and community stay connected and communicate openly, we can better support students as they learn and grow.

Thank you for the continued support you provide to our students and schools. Let's keep showing up, staying connected, and being proactive. Together, we can continue building a strong foundation for success.
