MHS Grading Update

Middletown High School Grading System 2019-20 

Due to the COVID-19 Shutdown of schools beginning March 16, 2020, Middletown High School will implement the following adjustment to the grading and granting of high school credit for the completion of the 2nd semester of the 2019-20 school year.

Students enrolled in grades 8-11 shall be given the opportunity to earn P(passing) marks in all high school accredited courses. Teachers shall provide course work to students to complete this requirement by May 19, 2020. Any course where a Passing mark has not been earned shall be removed from the student’s transcript in order to hold all students harmless due to this interruption in the educational process as caused by the School Shutdown. 

If course removal has occurred for any required course to meet graduation requirements, the student shall be scheduled to make this course up during the 2020-21 school year through credit recovery. There shall be no indication of a not passing mark on a student’s transcript due to this School Shutdown.

Student’s GPA will not be negatively affected by the Passing grading system, as their GPA will have remained unchanged from the end of the first semester of the 2019-20 school year. Weighted courses will therefore have no effect negative or positive on the GPA.  AP courses carry Advanced Placement Credit as students test.  College Credit Plus courses carry college credit. Therefore, there is recognition for undertaking these high-level courses.

Most colleges request an unweighted GPA now which therefore, is also not impacted.

As for students’ course requests for the 2020-21 school year, these will not be changed from their original registration which had been completed in February of 2020. Schedule changes for the 2020-21 school year will continue to be communicated, and if initiated by the student, will continue to require written parental consent submitted to the student’s guidance counselor.
