Canal Days Tour Through Downtown Middletown

May 18, 2026
Middletown City Schools 3rd graders from all seven elementary schools explored historic locations throughout downtown Middletown during the annual Canal Days field trip!

Students learned about Middletown’s important role in the Miami Erie Canal while discovering the stories, landmarks, and people that helped shape our community. From the Canal First Dig Boulder Monument to the Port Middletown Mural and Water Art Installation, students traveled through history with stops at the Canal Museum and the replica Locktender’s House, while also enjoying lunch from the Middie Meal Machine at Smith Park. The Shartle House welcomed students with fresh popcorn and a showing of the 1929 Canal Closing Day Parade.

Board members and staff from Downtown Middletown Inc. volunteered to help make the experience possible, alongside the Middletown Historical Society volunteers, who brought Middletown’s history to life in a fun and meaningful way for our students.

A special thank you to K-6 Curriculum Coordinator Tracy Neeley for coordinating the logistics behind this incredible experience, and to all of the staff members who attended and supported students throughout the trip.
We love seeing our downtown community come together to invest in the next generation and create hands-on learning experiences that help students connect with Middletown’s rich history!
