Girls on the Run Races into Middletown City Schools

Amanda Team finishes strong at GOTR 5k

At Amanda Elementary in the Middletown City School District, the Girls on the Run program has the support of the students, staff, and parents. This fall, twice a week, the girls ran full speed at every practice. Although both Amanda Elementary teams are made up of special young ladies, the afternoon team is a little different from most teams.

“The afternoon team has a few girls who have been overcoming challenges their whole lives, but have chosen to push themselves even harder than ever.  It makes me proud to share that we have a few girls who have IEPS and even one who is visually impaired/legally blind. Each of our girls continue to put their heart into every practice and are proud of their accomplishments,” said Becky Parsons, Assistant Coach.

Even though the running portion of the practices was not easy, you never heard one girl complain. Instead, the girls were laughing and shouting words of encouragement to each other.

Amanda Elementary brought in the Girls on the Run program because of its strong history of supporting young girls’ minds, bodies, and spirits in healthy, positive ways. Girls on the Run is a transformational learning program for 8- to 13-year-old girls. As the website states, the program inspires girls to be joyful, healthy, and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum that creatively integrates running.  Lessons provide girls with the tools to make positive decisions and to avoid risky adolescent behaviors. The program culminates with the girls being physically and emotionally prepared to complete a celebratory 5k running event. The goal of the program is to unleash confidence through accomplishment while establishing a lifetime appreciation of health and fitness.

The Amanda coaches honored the Girls on the Run goal by spending part of practice working on self-esteem lessons with the girls. Over the course of 10 weeks, the coaches worked the girls up to the 5k event, even running a practice 5k to show the runners they are capable of running or walking the full 3.10 miles.

On Saturday, the fall program finished strong at the Girls on the Run 5k at Sawyer Point in Cincinnati, Ohio. Thanks to the hard work and coaching, every Amanda team member completed the 5k fun run. It goes without saying that coaches Michelle Hurr and Becky Parsons were instrumental to their successes.
