Conant Smith: A Cross Country Success

In a sport where milliseconds count, the difference between first and second place can come down to the wire. Over the weekend, Conant Smith, a junior at Middletown High School, knows this all too well as he narrowly lost out on the first place medal in the Division I cross country state championship at National Trail Raceway.  With a time of 15:03.9, Smith placed second to Dustin Horter from Lakota East, losing by .04 seconds.

Prior to the state championship, Smith ran 10 races this year, winning seven, and setting course records on five of the courses. He set a school record and a personal record at the GMC Championships where he ran 15:00.2. At the Bob Schul Invitational, he broke Middie great, Jeff See's school record with a time of 15:10.0. See was a two-time State Champion in cross country and eventually raced in the 2016 US Olympic Qualifiers in the 3200 meter event.

Since Smith is a junior, he has another year to prepare for next year’s championship, and, like most runners, he does not take a season off. Smith is running in the Nike National Championships the first week in December in Oregon. In the spring, he competes in Track & Field. Last year, Smith was fifth in the State Track meet in the 3200 meter run last spring and ran 9:14. Smith has a 1600 personal record of 4:12.9. He is ranked as one of the top juniors in the nation in track and cross country.

In his spare time, Smith is in SALT (Student-Athlete Leadership Team) and maintains a GPA of 3.679. ALl his hard work and dedication is getting noticed by colleges and universities. Schools reaching out with letters are: University of Michigan, Penn State, The Ohio State University, UConn, Villanova, Georgetown, North Carolina State, University of Florida, LSU, Oklahoma State, Arizona State, USC (Southern California), Miami University (Ohio), Furman University, and Northern Arizona University.
