All That JAZZ
Congratulations to MHS Senior Steffin Woods for his involvement in the Ohio Music Educator's Association conference this past weekend at the Duke Energy Convention Center in Cincinnati, OH. Steffin was one of only 5 trumpet players in the state selected for the OMEA All State Jazz Band. Steffin was selected through an audition process which included submitting recordings of several pieces of jazz literature to the selection committee last May. As a member of the All State Jazz Band, Steffin spent about 17 hours rehearsing over a 3 day period with the other selected musicians from around the state and the guest clinician. The All State Band performed an outstanding concert on Saturday afternoon for a packed house of music educators, professional musicians, family and friends.

6th Grade Honor's GATE program Plans Middletown Revitalization Project
The 2015-2016 school year marked the first year the Gifted and Talented Enrichment program, GATE Program, launched the Honors 6th grade pilot program. Each Friday, identified sixth grade students attend Central Academy for the entire day to receive instruction from teachers certified to teach gifted students. This year, the focus is creating a business that will assist in the revitalization of Downtown Middletown. During their extended classroom field trip, students made comparisions between downtown Middletown and Lebanon. Students studied the rich history and culture of Middletown by visiting the city’s historical society. The Honors Class have hosted guest speakers, constructed timeline of past Middletown events and designed, conducted and analyzed surveys to record community’s input on ideas to improve and revitalize Downtown Middletown. Students are now past the research phase and are preparing their business plan. The end goal is to present the business plan and project to representatives of MCSD, parents and other interested parties. The Middletown GATE Program is under the supervision of Carolyn Mack and is comprised of three teachers that work as a team. They enrich and enhance Language Arts (Mr. Lane Tucker), Math (Ms. Laurie Wood) and Creativity (Creativity and Problem Solving (Mrs. Dani Ortega).
