Parent Mentor Program

Welcome To The Parent Mentor Program

The Parent Mentor Program is funded through a renewable yearly grant from the Ohio Department of Education.  I am one of 71 Parent Mentors who work in individual school districts throughout the state. In my role as Parent Mentor for Middletown City Schools, I serve as a support person for families who have children with disabilities. I am also a parent of a child with disabilities (now a young adult!) so I understand the joys and challenges we face as parents both at home and at school. I am one of the few people in the school district that can remain with you and your child from the time he or she enters preschool until they graduate high school.
I am always available to help by attending meetings with you, sharing information about parenting and educating a child with special needs, problem solving with the school district when conflicts arise, or locating community resources when needed. This web page provides only a small number of the free resources that are available to you. A comprehensive library and other booklets and information are available in the Parent Mentor office.
There were many changes in special education this year.  New regulations and operating standards for serving children with disabilities went into effect in July of 2015.  Whose IDEA Is This (parent guide) will be updated as well.  Once available, the new guide will be posted on the web site.
Surrogate Parents:
Middletown Schools is looking for individuals who would like to serve as a surrogate parent to represent a child with a disability in all matters relating to qualifying for or receiving special education and related services. A surrogate parent is needed when a child's parent can not be located or identified, the child is a ward of the state, or the child is an unaccompanied homeless youth. Surrogate parents would need to take an online training course and be approved by the superintendent. If you are interested, please call the Parent Mentor office for more details.
