On May 6, 2014, voters in Middletown approved a $95 million bond issue for the construction of a new middle school on the current high school campus, as well as additions and renovations to the high school, including additional classroom space and a new competition gym.  The district captures $40 of this in funding towards the project from the Ohio Schools Facilities Commission (OSFC).  The project includes:

  • Up-to-date security features for student and staff safety.
  • Modern wireless technology, up-to-date science labs and more.
  • Improved lighting and replaced mechanicals
  • Improved HVAC for healthier air quality.
Energy-efficient schools which will translate to a savings to residents over time.

Construction Update- March
Posted 3/30/2017 at 9:08:52 AM by Destini Burns [staff member]
As construction continues we are reaching a pivotal time. The new electrical service is coming online which will allow the new mechanical systems to be fired up. You will start to notice over the next couple weeks, new windows being installed, the new Wade E. Miller Arena will be getting closed in and finish brick being installed on the exterior of the buildings.

This summer (just a short 6 weeks away for us) will bring the start of renovating the remainder of the High School. For the summer, the main part of the building will be completely closed. Offices for the High School will operate out of the Manchester building on campus.

Transition is the keyword as Middletown City School District's construction project approaches Spring. Middletown High School's Kitchen will close around March first. Hot meals will be served to students until the end of the academic year. The district has decided to close the MHS kitchen early so renovations can be completed and the kitchen will be ready to go by next school year. Both the majority of the seating areas and the kitchen will be done prior to the start of school. Office staff will begin moving into their temporary locations in April. The new Middletown High School Office space will be ready in August. Teachers will also begin to transition as the new spaces become available for students.
At the start of next school year, we will have six of the new science labs and twenty newly renovated classrooms ready for use. For athletics and PE classes, the Paul Walker Gym will be available at the start of the year and the new Wade E. Miller Arena opens shortly after in December. This Spring, the MHS Softball and Baseball teams transition to their new home fields at Lefferson Park.
Construction Update

Construction continues on budget and on schedule. The lend Lease/Conger Teams continue to work diligently on the project. Some of the current highlights include:
  • Roofing on the High School started
  • Classrooms in the renovated section of the building have drywall hung
  • Roof replacement over the renovated sections has started
  • Classroom/Office additions on the front of the High School have started roofing and are scheduled to be completed in time for school
  • The middle school continues to get block walls laid by the masons.
  • Preparations are going on in the occupied portions for the building to meet the demands of additional areas of the building closed for the months of March, April, and May
Overall, the challenges we have run into working inside an existing building that is close to 50 years old have been predictable. That said, we have set aside funds in the project to deal with the unforeseen conditions.

Construction on the new facilities continues on schedule and on budget. There are over 100 construction workers on site everyday and things are going very smooth. Our community can now see the High School science rooms and offices starting to go up right in front of the existing building. In the Southwest corner of the property, there are high walls that are going up. In the future, those walls will be the new Middle School gym.
